This review is based on information we received from customer service representatives. They were able to give us a pretty clear "yes" about data being stored locally which is why we feel comfortable in giving this product a 'maybe.' Our Progress Notes

The Livescribe Smart Pen is a note-taking device from Anoto. This device allows users to take notes, which are then stored locally on the device and can then be uploaded to a laptop using smartpen software. Livescribe is compatible with both Mac and PC and includes an application called Livescribe+ compatible with both Android and Apple. The pen is connected to the device you wish to upload your notes to and then stored locally on the computer, tablet, or smartphone. Livescribe smartpen requires special paper which can be printed from the company’s website or available for purchase in notebooks.
