Level 101 Gentle Introduction Course
What Do We Cover in Level 101?
“How does HIPAA Security work?”
“Is HIPAA compliance something I can learn to do?”
“What is it like to consider security issues in the way that HIPAA requires it?”
Level 101 Educational Objectives:
- Create a plan for when and how to begin a process of HIPAA-mandated risk analysis and risk management planning appropriate to the attendee’s own practice context
- Identify Internet communication services the attendee is currently using that qualify as HIPAA Business Associates
- Describe the process of protecting sensitive client information in terms of risks and risk management measures, so as to start becoming oriented to HIPAA’s security standards

This introductory level course is intended for mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and psychologists in clinical practice.

Level I Educational Objectives:
- Determine what the clinician needs to do to achieve compliance with HIPAA Security and HITECH mandates around transmission technology.
- Describe security standards like encryption and when we need them in clinical practice – legally, ethically and practically.
- Assess popular communications technologies for ethical, clinical and practical appropriateness for use with clients.
3 CE Hours, Date TBA, Typically @ 11AM – 2PM Pacific, 2PM – 5PM Eastern
This introductory level course is intended for mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and psychologists in clinical practice.

Level II Course
What Do We Cover in Level II?
“What is the real process for complying with HIPAA Security? How can I make it work in my small mental health practice?”
“What can I do to make my computer, smart phone, and other devices HIPAA-secure?”
“Is it safe to use the cloud in my practice? Why would I want to?”
Level II Educational Objectives:
- Incorporate client behaviors and beliefs around security/privacy into assessment and treatment.
- Conduct a HIPAA-compliant risk analysis and create a risk management plan
- Describe what is needed to secure data storage and mobile devices to HIPAA-compliant levels
3 CE Hours, Date TBA, Typically @ 11AM – 2PM Pacific, 2PM – 5PM Eastern
This introductory level course is intended for mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and psychologists in clinical practice. While the level of this course is introductory, we strongly urge you only to take it after you’ve taken Level I.

Roy Huggins, LPC NCC
Course Author and Presenter
Roy is an adjunct instructor at the Portland State University Counseling program where he teaches Ethics, and is a member of the Zur Institute advisory board. He has acted as a subject matter expert on HIPAA, security and clinical use of technology for Counseling licensure boards and both state and national mental health professional organizations. He has co-authored or authored 2 book chapters, and he routinely consults with mental health colleagues on ethical and practical issues surrounding tech in clinical practice. He served for 5 years on the board of the Oregon Mental Health Counselors Association and then the Oregon Counseling Association as the Technology Committee Chair.
He really likes this stuff.
